Understanding Obessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent obsessions or compulsions or both that cause significant distress, interfere with normal daily functioning, and consume a lot of time. The affected individual recognizes these obsessions and compulsions as excessive or unreasonable.

Examples of obsessions include the fear of being contaminated by touching anything someone else has touched, doubts that you’ve locked the door or turned off the stove, intense stress when objects aren’t orderly or facing a certain way, images of hurting yourself or someone else, thoughts about shouting obscenities or acting inappropriately, and unpleasant sexual images recurring in your mind. Some examples of compulsion signs and symptoms include hand-washing until your skin becomes raw, counting in certain patterns, silently repeating a prayer, word, or phrase, and hours spent unnecessarily organizing.

A person comforts another by holding their hand. Both are seated, and the image focuses on their hands and arms, conveying support and empathy.

How We Help

The symptoms of OCD are thought to occur due to biological, genetic, and environmental factors resulting in miscommunication in the brain, creating a vicious cycle. At Ascend Health Center, our evidence-based solutions augment talk therapy and medications, which often are only partially successful in treating OCD. Ketamine in intravenous and nasal form increases neuroplasticity, helping neurons in the brain communicate effectively and breaking the thinking loop that OCD inflicts. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA and insurance approved drugless method to dampen the neurons responsible for OCD.
